Nicolò Zaniolo, now a Fiorentina midfielder, has opened up about his brief and challenging spell at Atalanta and his decision to join the Viola during the winter transfer window. Speaking to Sport Mediaset, Zaniolo shared his thoughts on returning to Florence, his regrets about past choices, and his aspirations for the future.
On Returning to Fiorentina
Zaniolo, who spent part of his youth career at Fiorentina, described his move back to Florence as a natural fit. “Returning to Florence after my time in the youth academy isn’t about revenge—it’s about football and passion,” he said. “I chose a club where I know I can feel good.”
Regrets About Choosing Atalanta
Reflecting on his decision to join Atalanta last summer instead of Fiorentina, Zaniolo admitted he might have made a mistake. “With hindsight, I would have made a different decision in June,” he confessed. “But football, like life, is made of choices, and I made mine. Bergamo was an experience that helped me grow, but I didn’t play much and didn’t enjoy myself. Looking back at how things went, I would have chosen Fiorentina from the start.”
Overcoming Injuries
Zaniolo also discussed the challenges he faced with injuries earlier in his career, particularly two cruciate ligament tears. “The first injury I experienced with more lightheartedness—I was still young and probably didn’t fully realize what had happened,” he explained. “The second one was a real blow because it came so soon after my return. I won’t deny that I had moments of doubt, wondering if this sport was still for me. But my passion for football kept me going, and today I’m here thanks to that passion.”
Missing Euro 2024
One of the toughest moments for Zaniolo came when he missed out on Euro 2024 due to an injury sustained while playing for Aston Villa. “Missing the European Championship hurt a lot, especially because I got injured in the last match with Aston Villa just days before the final training camp,” he said. “Despite that, I followed the tournament passionately and cheered for Italy.”
