Empoli have announced the return of defender Mattia Viti on a temporary basis from OGC Nice, with an option to make the move permanent. Viti, born on January 24, 2002, in Borgo San Lorenzo, is a product of Empoli’s youth academy. He joined the club in 2010 after brief stints with Ponte a Greve and Audace Legnaia. The Italian defender progressed through the ranks, making his first-team debut for Empoli in a Coppa Italia match against Renate on September 30, 2020.
During Empoli’s promotion-winning season to Serie A, Viti made two league appearances. The following year in the top flight proved to be his breakthrough, as he featured in 20 matches, helping the club secure survival. His Serie A debut came at the age of 19 in a 2-0 away victory against Cagliari.
Viti’s impressive performances caught the eye of French club Nice, who signed him in August 2022. In his time in Ligue 1, he made nine appearances and scored one goal in a 3-2 win against Troyes. He also featured three times in the Europa Conference League.
The young defender spent last season on loan at Sassuolo, gaining further top-flight experience. Viti has also represented Italy at the Under-21 level, earning six caps for the Azzurrini.
This loan move marks a return to familiar surroundings for Viti, as he rejoins the club where he developed as a player. Empoli will be hoping his return can bolster their defensive options for the upcoming season.
