Roma in Advanced Talks to Sign Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri on Loan

Start

AS Roma are making a serious push to land Argentine playmaker Claudio Echeverri from Manchester City on loan this summer, with discussions now in advanced stages, according to multiple Italian sources.

The Giallorossi see the 19-year-old as a key creative reinforcement for new manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s system.

Their interest comes amid growing chatter around summer transfer activity, which has also drawn attention from fans following the markets on various offshore sportsbooks.

Echeverri, signed by Manchester City from River Plate in January 2024 for around €18.5 million, has only made one Premier League appearance under Pep Guardiola.

Now, with the player open to gaining experience elsewhere, Roma have emerged as the frontrunners to secure his services.

Claudio Echeverri to Roma Transfer Latest

Reports suggest Roma are negotiating for a season-long loan with an option to buy to help get around the tight financial restrictions they’re working within.

However, Manchester City isn’t keen to let go of Echeverri completely. The Premier League giants would prefer to include a buy-back clause or future sell-on terms, ensuring they retain influence over a player they still rate highly for the long term.

The blueprint for such a deal could resemble the Evan Ferguson transfer, where Roma bought the player permanently while still allowing the parent club, Brighton, to retain certain rights.

The move could be an ideal fit for Echeverri, who would join a Roma squad already rich in Argentine talent, including Paulo Dybala and Matias Soule.

That familiarity, alongside a clearer pathway to first-team minutes, has reportedly made the idea of a move to Rome very appealing for the teenager and his camp.

Sources close to the player say Echeverri is eager to play in Serie A and has welcomed Roma’s interest, especially given the club’s attacking style and Gasperini’s faith in young players.

Who Is Claudio Echeverri?

Nicknamed “El Diablito”, Echeverri burst onto the scene during the South American U-20 Championship, scoring six goals and registering three assists for Argentina.

His performances earned him a move to Manchester City, though he spent several months back on loan at River Plate before joining up with City’s squad earlier this summer.

The midfielder is best known for his role as a classic No.10 but is versatile enough to operate from either wing. He even scored a notable free-kick goal against Al-Ain in the FIFA Club World Cup – one of his few highlights in a City shirt so far.

Despite his obvious promise, Echeverri has played just 64 minutes for the English champions since arriving, with injuries and fierce competition limiting his opportunities.

Does Pep Want to Keep Echeverri?

While Roma are prepared to act quickly, the final green light must come from Pep Guardiola.

The City boss has so far used Echeverri sparingly and may now be inclined to allow a loan move that benefits the player’s development – especially if terms protect City’s long-term interests.

Until Guardiola gives the nod, Roma waits. But confidence is growing in the Italian capital that a deal could be completed before the start of the new Serie A season.

If Roma can pull off the move, it could be one of the more shrewd additions of the window. Echeverri offers flair, energy, and playmaking ability, and a season in Italy could give him the consistent top-level experience he needs.

Roma are also continuing to explore other attacking options, but few offer the raw potential and resale value that Echeverri brings.
