Football economists and club chiefs drum on about just how important Champions League revenue is to financial health, but how much could Napoli stand to lose if they don’t make it past the league phase?
Victory against Qarabag towards the end of November placed Napoli in a commanding position to go on and cement their place in the play-off positions, at the very least.
Fast-forward to the final matchday, and they are now staring down the barrel at another underwhelming Champions League campaign.
A spineless defeat in Lisbon saw Benfica run out 2-0 victors in December, before a potentially pivotal play-off decider in Copenhagen saw both sides share the spoils.
Just eight points from seven games leaves them outside the play-off places, with a difficult fixture set to decide their fate.
As Antonio Conte’s dismal European record is called into question yet again by disgruntled Napoli fans, he must prove himself against one of his former employers, Chelsea, who themselves will be aiming to keep hold of their automatic promotion berth.
Not only would a positive result help to quash Conte’s doubters, but Napoli will be heavily reliant on Champions League revenue to remain competitive in the transfer market.
How Much Do You Get For the Round of 16 of the Champions League?
Beyond the guaranteed €18m simply for qualifying for the Champions League, Europe’s elite club competition offers steadily increasing renumeration at each stage.
Of course, gate receipts and a share of broadcast revenue is rolled into a substantial payday for teams – particularly those near the summit of the league phase.
However, even making it past the first stage could be a season-changing amount of money for the minnows near the bottom.
For the sake of this article, Napoli’s current station means they can scarcely afford to lose missing out.
Conte issued a rallying cry to Primavera players prematurely promoted to the first team before the draw in Copenhagen, with Napoli plagued by a slew of injuries this season.
Champions League revenue for getting to the round of 16, which stands at €11m, would go some way to helping them finance replacements, or even stop-gap loans before the end of the current window.
Napoli’s agreement with Alisson Santos of Sporting Lisbon shows their January business is far from over, with Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi and Bologna’s Emil Holm still on their wishlist.
How Much Money Could Napoli Stand to Miss Out On?
As well as the guaranteed €11m for securing safe passage, it is worth breaking down just how much several missed matches in the Champions League amounts to.
For high-profile matches in Europe club records show Napoli generate anywhere from €3m-€5m in matchday revenue. That means without potentially two more home games beyond the league phase, they could miss out on as much as €10m.
Add to that UEFA’s performances bonuses, which are split depending on the result.
