A 3-1 victory against Como on Thursday night saw AC Milan’s unbeaten run stretch to 19, moving them within three points of leaders Inter. They also hit a milestone that, historically speaking, bodes well for their title chances.
An Adrien Rabiot-inspired win against Como has propelled AC Milan into a new-found level of self-belief that, despite Inter’s dominance this season, they could well pip them to the Scudetto.
It was the kind of performance that typifies Max Allegri’s often grating strategy, but his formula for digging out wins in the face of adversity is what drives his undeniable success in this league.
No longer do Milan roll over at the first sign of trouble. Como dominated the ball for large swathes of the contest – 68 percent possession to be precise – while their Expected Goals (xG) tally was higher than Milan’s despite being outscored by two in reality.
Milan’s troubling bottom-half record is seemingly rectified in top-of-the-table clashes such as these, where Allegri’s system feeds on absorbing opposition pressure, only to strike with aggression when the time is right.
Fixtures against the top six have seen the opposition average possession of over 60 percent – it is clear Milan favour games where there is no pressure to be the ones constantly on the front foot.

AC Milan Have Only Lost Once After 20 Games
Victory in Como ensures AC Milan’s unbeaten run stretches to 19 games.
This is the first time the Rossoneri have registered an unbeaten streak of this length since Carlo Ancelotti was coach, where they won 15 games and drew four between January and May 2005.
While Allegri’s run has not been quite as fruitful in terms of points, it has allowed them to keep pace with an unrelenting Inter who show no signs of letting up in their quest to snatch their crown back from Napoli.
It is also worth noting that Milan have lost just once in their first 20 matches on two previous occasions in the three-point era. In 1995-96 and 2003/04; in both seasons, they went on to lift the title.
This is a good omen for a resurgent Milan, who are proving they have the mettle to persevere this season.
