Parma Ready to Hand Chelsea Outcast Deivid Washington the Senior Minutes He’s Been Craving

Deivid Washington has struggled to make an impact since a high-profile move to Chelsea as a teenager, and Parma are prepared to offer him a career springboard.
It is a move that could prove to be mutually beneficial for both parties; Deivid Washington’s development has been stunted by a lack of game time, while Parma need to find a way to fix their problems in front of goal.
The proposed move comes after a member of Fabrizio Romano’s team, Matteo Moretto, revealed Parma’s interest in Washington.
Parma’s move for Andreas Schjelrup looks set to be hijacked by Club Brugge who have now agreed terms, leaving the Crociati to search for alternatives.
Their recent transfer interest does appear to follow a pattern, with Carlos Cuesta and the Parma hierarchy prepared to invest in the long-term vision of the club by recruiting younger players.
What Happened to Deivid Washington at Chelsea?
A boyhood Gremio player, Washington famously made his name after switching to Santos in 2016 at age 11, where he became top scorer in the U17 league with 16 goals.
That alerted scouts to his talents, with Washington likened to Zlatan Ibrahimovic after striking a balance between all-round technical ability and using his physicality to bully defenders – even at a young age.
Washington became one of a slew of young players signed to seven-year contracts at Chelsea, who dropped an eye-brow rising fee of €21m to bring him in.
A cycle of new managers and limited minutes has scarcely seen his career at Chelsea get off the ground, and he was recently loaned back to Santos, albeit for just seven months after failing to make an impact.
It appears his stalling career at Chelsea is all but finished, opening the door for potential suitors to take a chance.
Can Washington Help Parma’s Goal Problems?
Parma could certainly do with an injection of something different this season.
Particularly of late, their ability to put the ball in the net has dried up, scoring just three in their last six and drawing blank in three straight games.
Their goal tally of just 14 in 22 games is the second-worst haul in Serie A this season, with Lecce’s 13 the lowest.
Washington, although not hugely prolific since flying the nest in Brazil, has a reputation for being a classical number nine with modern, ball-playing qualities.
His natural instincts in dangerous areas and his ability to shield the ball could help to also bring some of Parma’s more creative outlets into the game, such as sprightly full-back Sascha Britschgi and Juventus target Adrian Bernabe.
His arrival, whether on loan or on a permanent deal, would also likely be budget-friendly given his reputation has dwindled in recent seasons.
