Barcelona And Liverpool Lead The Race For Atalanta Star Ederson

The 26-year-old will be very much in demand next month.

Ederson is being tracked by European powerhouses Barcelona and Liverpool with both clubs preparing January bids.

The Atalanta ace is widely considered one of the hottest properties in Italy’s elite soccer division. With just 18 months remaining on his contract, the current English and Spanish champions believe they can manufacture a cheaper deal.

Interest in the Brazilian defensive midfielder is certainly plentiful but as it stands, Hansi Flick and Arne Slot’s men are showing the strongest intent.

Will Atalanta Sell Ederson In January?

Although interest in Atalanta’s Ederson is extensive, Barcelona and Liverpool are the only clubs preparing for January bids.

Ideally, La Dea doesn’t want to lose the Brazilian-baller mid-season but they may be forced to cash in. It’s unlikely that Ederson will extend his stay in Bergamo so head coach Raffaele Palladino has plenty to ponder.

Especially with Ademola Lookman AFCON-bound next week. His absence will weaken Palladino’s roster and selling Ederson won’t help the club’s top four aspirations.

Nonetheless, if the 26-year-old doesn’t want to commit beyond 2027 – when his current deal expires – then it makes sense to sell him now to maximize profit.

How Much Will Ederson Cost?

Last week, Ederson’s agent – Andre Cury – believed a deal could be reached for approximately €30-40million. However, reports from Football Insider insist a fee of €55m is more realistic.

Even more so if Atalanta were to enter into negotiations mid-way through the season. Naturally, a lower figure could be agreed upon in the summer as Ederson would be in the final 12 months of his deal.

That price tag is unlikely to deter Barcelona and Liverpool. With that in mind, the Spaniards are working on a tight budget so they may be forced to sell to raise extra funds.

A swap deal involving Robert Lewandowski and Christopher Nkunku of AC Milan has been mooted. Getting Lewandowski off the wage bill would certainly help.

From the Reds point of view, they have the cash available. After a torrid run of form which has seen Mo Salah vent his frustrations with the club, acquiring Ederson could help steady the ship.

Atalanta’s January Transfer Targets

With Ademola Lookman away on international duty, Ederson the subject of transfer interest and Kamaldeen Sulemana injured, Atalanta are expected to be busy in January.

Bringing in fresh faces was always high on Raffaele Palladino’s to-do list when he replaced Ivan Juric. Coupled with Atalanta’s sluggish form, the need for new signings has certainly been heightened.

Roma target Jean-Philippe Mateta is one option who has been mentioned. However, the French striker is drawing interest from all over the continent and will be tricky to obtain.

In the middle of the pitch, Standard Liege whiz Hakim Sahabo has been linked with La Dea. The defensive midfielder could be viewed as a long-term successor to Ederson.

With a price tag of €6-7m, the 20-year-old falls well within Palladino’s winter budget. Elsewhere, the likes of Giovane, Santiago Gimenez, Lorenzo Lucca and Victor Froholdt have also been mentioned.
