Gian Piero Gasperini Questions Evan Ferguson Attitude As Roma Consider Irishman’s Future

Gian Piero Gasperini has questioned the attitude shown by Evan Ferguson as Roma prepare to terminate the Irishman’s loan spell.

The Roma manager is yet to be convinced by Ferguson during his opening months with the Giallorossi, as the Irishman has scored just one goal in 14 appearances across all competitions.

Ferguson moved to the Italian capital on loan in July after falling out-of-favor in the Premier League and Roma included a €35 million buy-option.

However, the Giallorossi are set to decline the opportunity to trigger this clause and bring in Ferguson on a permanent basis, as Gasperini looks for alternative options in January.

Ferguson’s issues in front of goal have been amplified by Paulo Dybala’s absence, as the Argentine has been Roma’s leading talisman for multiple years.

The 32-year-old’s deal in the Italian capital expires in June 2026 and Dybala has questioned his future with Roma after attracting interest from Boca Juniors.

Despite Dybala’s uncertain future, Roma are still unlikely to make Ferguson’s time in Roma permanent, as Gasperini is skeptical over the Irishman’s attitude.

Gasperini said: “I have nothing against him personally. It’s about the performances. Ferguson had a lot of chances. We want to wait for him to develop, but he has to do better, not just on a technical level, but in terms of attitude.

“For example, Mario Hermoso is a pillar of the locker room too, someone who sets the example on the field.”

If the former West Ham striker does not improve before 2026 then Ferguson may see his time with the Giallorossi come to an end in January.

Ferguson could be heading back to the Premier League earlier than expected, as Roma are willing to terminate his deal in Italy during the January window.

The Giallorossi are already targeting potential replacements, getting the green light to sign Joshua Zirkzee and this would see Ferguson head back to Brighton.

However, Ferguson has already been shortlisted by a host of Premier League sides if his time with Roma comes to end in January.

Leeds, Fulham and Burnley are all monitoring the Irishman’s situation, with Daniel Farke’s side leading the way after a mixed start to the Premier League season.

However, Ferguson is looking to join a side that is not competing in a relegation battle and may look to fight for his place in the Brighton side.

If Roma were to terminate Ferguson’s deal in January then the Giallorossi would have to accept a financial hit, as the Italian side agreed to cover the majority of his salary.
