Christian Vieri Believes Anyone That Makes Comparisons With Inter Milan Youngster ‘Doesn’t Understand Much’
Italian soccer icon Christian Vieri had some choice for words for those comparing himself to Pio Esposito.
Christian Vieiri has refuted recent comparisons with Inter Milan youngster Pio Esposito as the Italian continues to impress under Cristian Chivu.
Christian Vieri Outraged By Comparisons With Inter Milan Star
The former Azzurri star has dismissed comments over a similarity with Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito, as Vieri believes the youngster is closer to Luca Toni.
Esposito has become a regular member of the Inter Milan roster since returning from a two-year loan at Spezia, contributing to six goals in 19 appearances this season (3G + 3A).
His place under Cristian Chivu is set to be secure going into 2026 despite Inter’s planned transfer revolution in January, but Vieri does not believe Espositio has done enough to earn these comparison claims.
Vieri said: “Anyone who says he’s the new Vieri doesn’t understand much. They used to call me the new Boninsegna. Pio has different traits. Physically, he’s closer to Toni.
“He’s doing well when he plays, but he’s very young. Last year he was at Spezia in Serie B. That’s a huge leap. He has the right mentality and he’s in the right place. Whether he explodes now or later depends only on him, I’m not Harry Potter.”
The 52-year-old is one of the most renowned names in Italy after scoring 142 goals in Serie A, while also holding a special place with the Nerazzurri – scoring 122 goals and winning Coppa Italia with Inter.
Vieri was also a household star with the Azzurri national team, scoring nine goals in nine World Cup appearances – a feat Espositio is hoping to match in 2026.
Pio Esposito Dreams Of World Cup Spot
Alongside a recent explosion at club level, Esposito has also announced himself on the international stage, earning a place in Italy’s last three camps.
The 20-year-old has scored three goals in five appearances for the Azzurri and is hoping to cement a place in Italy’s squad for the nation’s World Cup playoff semi final against Northern Ireland.
Gennaro Gattuso is a big fan of Esposito but the Italian will have fierce competition from the likes of Mateo Retegui, Giacomo Raspadori and Moise Kean.
Espositio may be selected to replace Kean as the Fiorentina star was labelled a complete failure after La Viola’s recent defeat by Parma.
However, the 20-year-old has failed to score in his last 10 league appearances for Inter and has shown signs of inexperience in the latter stages of 2025.
