After recent comments about managing Inter Milan, Diego Simeone showed his tactical superiority over Cristian Chivu in the Champions League.
Diego Simeone Made Inter Milan ‘Suffer’
The Atletico Madrid manager revealed his love for Inter Milan in the build-up to their Champions League clash on November 26th and Simeone showed a strong account of himself.
Jose Maria Gimenez scored a 93rd minute header to secure a 2-1 victory for the Spanish side and handed Inter Milan their first defeat in Europe.
This made it two consecutive defeats across all competitions for the Nerazzurri and Cristian Chivu questioned his side’s mentality in games against other elite sides.
Simeone’s comments over Inter before the match sparked some headlines and added further pressure onto Chivu’s shoulders, which have been amplified after the performance in Spain.
After the match, Simeone revealed how he managed to guide his side to victory against the Serie A giants and highlighted the tactics used to make Inter suffer.
Simeone said: “We played against an incredibly strong team, I think one of the best in the Champions League. We knew that, and our first half was aimed at limiting their football with pace and physicality, who could run when we recovered the ball.
“We knew they would suffer on counter-attacks, especially getting behind their wing-backs. Knowing that we could rely on a different part of our repertoire in the second half, the substitutes allowed us to continue the plan.”
Earning this victory over Chivu has added further fuel to the fire over Simeone taking charge of Inter in the future, as the Argentine’s time in Spain remains uncertain.
Atletico Madrid Boss Makes Inter Milan Dream Clear
Simeone has a strong relationship with the Italian side after spending three-years with the Nerazzurri between 1996 and 1999, making 85 appearances for Inter.
The 55-year-old also enjoyed a lengthy stint with Lazio (1999-2003), making 136 appearances and furthering his attachment to the Italian league.
As previously mentioned, Simeone highlighted his desire to manager Inter Milan in the future, saying that a move to Italy ‘will happen’ during his coaching career.
His future in the Spanish capital has been the topic of conversation in Thursday’s Italian paper round-up, but Simeone has not confirmed any plans to leave Atletico.
The Argentine’s deal in Madrid comes to an end June 2027, meaning a move away from Spain before the end of this season and Inter will also be forced to consider Simeone’s salary demands.
After agreeing a new deal in November 2023, the Atletico Madrid boss became the highest paid manager in Europe – meaning Simeone would need to take a substantial pay-cut to manage Inter.
Although Siemone’s admiration for the club is a strong bargaining factor for Inter, Cristian Chivu still has two-years remaining on his current deal and the Nerazzurri are likely to keep the Romanian until the end of this season.
