Why Was Mel Gibson At Roma’s Serie A Clash Against Verona?

Spectators at the Roma vs Verona Serie A clash were joined in attendance by Hollywood movie star Mel Gibson.  

The Mad Max actor was spotted at the Stadio Olimpico for the MD5 clash which the Giallorossi went on to win 2-0. Artem Dovbyk scored the opener before Matias Soule ensured the points stayed in the capital.

Gibson would have been impressed by the home side’s efforts which now means they sit joint-top of Italy’s elite soccer division. However, why was the A-lister at the soccer match?

Why Was Mel Gibson At Roma Vs Verona?

Mel Gibson was at the soccer match owing to filming commitments for the new Resurrection of the Christ spectacle. It is the long-awaited sequel to The Passion Of The Christ.

The movie was released in 2004 and was a huge success at the box office. The film – which Gibson directed – generated over $600million worldwide but was hit with mixed reviews owing to its graphic nature.

It’s understood that Gibson will be shooting scenes across a number of locations in Italy. The towns of Ginosa and Altamura will be used as well as Madera.

Before he gets stuck into his new project, Gibson would have been mightily impressed by Roma striker Artem Dovbyk‘s header to put the Giallorossi ahead in Rome.

After Verona came close to forcing an equalizer, Matias Soule scored from close range to give the hosts all three points. Much to Gibson’s delight.

What Are Mel Gibson’s Best Films?

Mel Gibson is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood. The 69-year-old actor and film-maker has starred in a number of huge hits over the years.

Gibson found global fame for his portrayal of Max Rockatansky in the Mad Max film series. He is also widely known for the Lethal Weapon movies where he played buddy cop Martin Riggs.

However, what do people consider to be Gibson’s best film to date? As an actor, Braveheart earned Gibson critical acclaim for his portrayal of Scottish warrior William Wallace.

With Mel Gibson in Italy for the foreseeable, will the 69-year-old star take in any more Serie A matches? It’s unknown whether he will at this stage but it’s likely that he would if the opportunity presents itself.

His filming commitments for the Resurrection Of The Christ will mean that Gibson is on an extremely tight schedule. He admitted that the project is ‘super ambitious‘ but catching a soccer match could help alleviate the stresses on set.

Naturally, Gibson would be well received by Serie A supporters and if the Roma result is anything to go by, he appears to be a lucky charm as well.
