Maurizio Micheli, head of scouting at Napoli, has agreed to join Arsenal and the Italian’s departure could have huge ramifications on the Serie A champions.
Why Is Maurizio Micheli Joining Arsenal?
Antonio Conte’s side have suffered a huge blow to their infrastructure after Mauricio Micheli completed a move to Premier League table-toppers, Arsenal.
Micheli first arrived in Naples in April 2010 from Brescia acting as a chief scout before leaving Naples in June 2015 to become the head of scouting at Hellas Verona.
The Italian’s time away from the Partenopei was short-lived, as Micheli returned to Naples in July 2018 after being offered an improved role from his last spell – becoming the head of scouting.
During Micheli’s time with Napoli he has seen the level of success rise tremendously, as the Partenopei have lifted two Serie A titles and become a regular member of the Champions League roster.
Moving away from Naples appeared to be a move that Micheli wanted at the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign, as the Italian is reportedly excited on beginning a new challenge outside of Italy.
His move to the Premier League will be Micheli’s first job away from his home nation, after working for Udinese, Brescia, Hellas Verona, Bologna and Napoli.
Aurelio De Laurentiis is said to be excited about the opportunity to work with a new head of scouting and the two parties split ways via mutual consent.
Micheli’s exit adds to a week of chaos in Naples, as Napoli are reportedly looking to make some progress over plans to build a new stadium following statements made by the clubs’ president.
Unlike this proposition for a new ground, Micheli’s decision will be in effect immediately and the Italian will begin his spell with the Gunners in the coming days.
Who Did Napoli Sign Under Maurizio Micheli?
Losing Maurizio Micheli will be a major loss to Napoli as the Italian helped to bring in some of the clubs’ most important players during his time in Naples.
The 57-year-old was a huge admirer of Kalidou Koulibaly during the Senegalese international’s spell with Genk and Napoli went on to sign the defender for just €7.75 million in July 2014.
After making 317 appearances for the Serie A giants, Koulibaly went on to join Chelsea in July 2022, as the Premier League side paid €41.9m and brought in a profit of around €34m.
Another player that was brought in from the recommendation of Micheli was Marek Hamsik, as the Italian scout first noticed the Slovakian with Brescia and oversaw a move to the Partenopei.
Hamsik went on to make 520 appearances for Napoli, which is the most by any player in history and secure two Coppa Italia trophies alongside a Supercoppa Italiana.
Micheli was also involved in the signings of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Kim-min Jae, as the duo joined Napoli for a combined fee of €32.3m in July 2022.
Napoli went on to win the Scudetto in the 2022/23 campaign and both Kvaratskhelia and Kim-min Jae parted ways with the club, bringing in a staggering €120m.
Other players that joined Napoli during Micheli’s tenure include Scott McTominay, Victor Osimhen, Edinson Cavani, Dries Mertens and Jorginho.
The 57-year-old was reportedly preparing another coup for a top young star, as Napoli remain interested in Brazialian star Rayan, but Micheli will now take this idea to Arsenal.
Who Will Replace Maurizio Micheli At Napoli?
Reports are suggesting that Napoli were willing to let Micheli leave after a lengthy spell together, which means the Serie A side have plans for a replacement.
Micheli came close to an exit during the latter stages of 2024, as Juventus were interested in bringing the Italian to Turin amid concerns over a lack of star quality.
When looking into a possible replacement Napoli could follow a similar path to Como, as Cesc Fabregas’ side recently appointed a scout from Twitter – but the Partenopei are expected to follow a more traditional path.
Omar Milanetto joined the club as a scout in August of this year after an impressive run with Cesena and the Italian has been linked with the vacant chief role.
Napoli may not be willing to offer a promotion to Milanetto after such a short period of time, meaning Luigi Caffarelli may be in the running after acting as the head of youth scouting for 13-years.
