Fiorentina have a huge January ahead of them amid their troubles this season and Fabio Paratici is expected to be at the centre of their decision-making.
Fabio Paratici will be watching Paolo Vanoli closely at Fiorentina as dilemma arises
Speculation linking Paratici and Fiorentina has been intensifying in recent weeks.
Now, it’s believed to only be a matter of time before Paratici leaves Tottenham and begins his Viola tenure.
A recent report claimed Fiorentina expect Paratici to become their new director on Monday, January 5.
The first thing likely to be in Paratici’s in-tray is the future of head coach Paolo Vanoli, according to Calciomercato.
Vanoli’s position is set for close review, with Fiorentina mindful of costs after handing previous coach Stefano Pioli a three-year deal worth €3m per season.
With that burden already on the books, appointing a third coach would be very taxing on Fiorentina’s finances.
There are no signs of a possible return for Pioli, while the next home match against Cremonese will be crucial for Vanoli.
If Fiorentina do change coach again, the names mentioned include Thiago Motta, Paulo Sousa, Gabriele Cioffi and Luca Gotti.
Who could leave Fiorentina in January – and who could stay
Amir Richardson will certainly leave Fiorentina, having been sidelined after an unauthorized interview with L’Equipe in which he expressed his desire to move.
Goalkeeper Tommaso Martinelli is also likely to leave on loan, with David de Gea now first choice.
That move would be made easier by Oliver Christensen returning to Fiorentina after his loan spell at Sturm Graz.
Edin Dzeko is on the market after limited minutes, with Pisa, Cagliari and Genoa all mentioned as possible options.
Pablo Mari could depart too, clearing space for a centre-back better suited to the back four Paolo Vanoli has recently adopted.

Other Fiorentina players linked with a January exit include Albert Gudmundsson and Dodo.
The Viola have not shown any intention to sell Gudmundsson or Moise Kean to fund a full-scale overhaul.
This is despite Kean’s inconsistency on the pitch, having impressed against Udinese before struggling against Parma.
Leaders such as David de Gea, now captain, and Robin Gosens are expected to stay through the window.
Dodo and Luca Ranieri appear less secure, however, with their situations seemingly more uncertain amid fan criticism.
Paratici will evaluate all options, especially since the Viola have little room for manoeuvre financially.
Who Fiorentina could sign in January
In terms of arrivals, Vanoli has asked for attacking wingers, and talks with Nice could open the door for Jeremie Boga.
Boga is apparently looking for a fresh start after falling out with Nice following an incident at the training ground.
In defence, Brighton’s Diego Coppola and Tottenham’s Radu Dragusin are cited as possible targets, alongside Union Berlin’s Diogo Leite.
For midfield, Fiorentina have looked at Cologne’s Germany Under-21 player Eric Martel and Udinese’s Sandi Lovric.
With limited room to spend after a €92m summer and a €60m deficit, Fiorentina have to tread carefully.
The stakes are high, with the Viola in real relegation danger – therefore, it’s crucial for Paratici to hit the ground running.
