Roma’s New Stadium Plans Move a Step Closer to Reality After Overcoming Environmental Challenge

Projections for a new Roma stadium to be completed by 2028 remains on course, with the latest environmental hurdle cleared by officials.

Plans for a new Roma stadium are at an advanced stage, and the ambitious construction project has edged that little bit closer to getting underway.

Preparatory works for the new $1.1 billion stadium are still due to begin by the end of this year. This had been with a view to completing the construction by 2027 to celebrate the club’s centenary, although several obstacles have delayed this timeline until 2028.

Not only have over 100 residents in the Pietralata area of Rome shown resistance to the new stadium, but geological and environmental surveys are ongoing.

An initial environmental report revealed some 15,000 square meters of forest in the surrounding area, that could be torn down to make way for a new ‘Curva Sud’ — or south stand — that is expected to be the largest single stand in Europe.

However, although fears that regional and national law could delay the project and incur costly mitigation, a new report has given Roma fresh confidence that impact to the area will be minimal.

Mauro Uniformi, president of Conaf (Council of the National Order of Agronomists and Forest Doctors), released a report describing the land as “a wooded area of little vegetation and naturalistic value”.

The Environment Department of the Municipality of Rome has also made the public in order to quell the doubts around Roma’s decision to construct the stadium, in this specific part of northeastern Rome.

The report continues by stating the area should not become an obstacle for Roma’s project.

It states: “7,000 square meters of areas formally definable as wooded areas have been identified on four parcels of municipal property, largely attributable to areas destined for urban green urban planning.”

Roma are among the favorites to win Serie A after hiring Gian Piero Gasperini, and this latest development marks another exciting chapter.

Roma New Stadium Plans

Roma have shared the Stadio Olimpico with city rivals Lazio for 85 years, but plans to move to their very own dedicated home is a sign of the club’s ambitions.

Not only will Roma be able to take full control of matchday revenue and commercial partnerships, but they can begin to build a new brand identity in their own stadium.

The 55,000-seat venue, which will have the captivity to expand by 62,000, will become the most expensive stadium in Italy.

Roma are the latest team to strive for a new home, with the conditions of many venues in Italy sub-par, thanks to the majority being municipality-owned, and therefore heavily underfunded.

Much like the San Siro, which has been deemed unfit to host Euro 2032, Roma are eager to move out of the Stadio Olimpico, which has been described as ‘tired’ and difficult to access by public transport.
