Milan Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek Receives England Call-Up For September’s WCQ

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been called up to the England squad for September’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia. 

The Milan midfielder will join the Three Lions set-up for the first time since 2019. His last appearance came in a 3-0 friendly victory over the USA at Wembley in November 2018.

All in all, Loftus-Cheek has ten international caps to his name with four of those coming in the 2018 World Cup. He featured in the group games against Tunisia, Panama and Belgium. He also featured against the latter in the third-placed playoff.

Who Is Ruben Loftus-Cheek Replacing In The England Squad?

Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek will replace Adam Wharton in the latest England squad. The Crystal Palace ace came off injured in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on August 31.

Loftus-Cheek’s call-up comes after the 29-year-old started in both Rossoneri Serie A fixtures this season. He also played for 66 minutes in the Coppa Italia victory over Bari.

As it stands, he appears to be ahead of the likes of Luka Modric and Samuele Ricci in Max Allegri’s preferred XI. Some could argue Ardon Jashari as well but the Swiss midfielder has recently picked up  an injury.

Fan Reaction To Ruben Loftus-Cheek England Call-Up

With Milan supporters warming to the idea of a reunion with defender Thiago Silva next year, fans have shared their views online about Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s return to the international scene.

One user posted on X, formerly Twitter: ‘You can never know how your football career can go. Never lose hope.’

Another added: ‘What a call up, nice to see it be someone not from the Premier League.’

‘Great to see Loftus-Cheek back in the England squad,’ said another.

However, not all of the feedback was positive. Some blasted England coach Thomas Tuchel’s decision to pick Loftus-Cheek over Jack Grealish.

‘Before Grealish? Sack Thomas before he tanks this squad completely clueless,’ one said. Another called for Tuchel to be sacked by simply stating: ‘That Germans got to go ASAP.’

Ruben Loftus Cheek’s Milan Stats

In 2023, Ruben Loftus-Cheek moved to Milan after spending eight seasons with Chelsea. He also enjoyed loan spells with Crystal Palace and Fulham before calling time on his Blues career.

Since switching to Italy, Loftus-Cheek has featured 71 times for the Rossoneri and scored 11 goals. The 29-year-old has also chipped in with three assists.

The only major honor he has won at the San Siro is the 2024-25 Supercoppa Italia. Loftus-Cheek was also part of the Milan team who lost the Coppa Italia final to Bologna in the same year.
