Sassuolo star Nemanja Matic could leave Serie A during the summer transfer window amid rumors over a move to MLS.
Nemanja Matic Denies Retirement Rumors
At 37-years-old Nemanja Matic is entering the final stages of his illustrious career and the Serbian has been subject to several rumors over a possible retirement.
The former Manchester United star joined Sassuolo on a one-year deal for the 2025/26 campaign and has gone on to become one of the club’s most important players.
Matic has started in every Serie A match since moving to Italy and his performances have impressed Fabio Grosso enough to earn the captain’s armband.
Sassuolo have struggled for form in recent weeks, losing their last three Serie A matches and failing to win in their last seven as the chance of a relegation battle looms.
The Neroverdi made a strong start to the season after earning promotion from Serie B and Grosso’s side received outsider shots for a European place – as Serie A could receive an extra Champions League spot this season.
Finishing in Europe is now an unrealistic target for Sassuolo after their recent league form and Nemanja Matic is reportedly concerned with the team’s performances.
The Serbian midfielder does have the option to extend his deal by another year, but Matic may consider a move to the United States this summer.
Serie A Star Considers MLS Move
The 37-year-old has a long list of accolades in Europe, winning three Premier League Titles, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Primeira Liga title, Taca de Portugal and two Taca da Liga trophies.
Winning any more substantial silverware will be a difficult task in Sassuolo and the Serbian may look to end his career in a different environment.
According to reports, a host of MLS sides are looking to bring Matic to the United States in the summer transfer window and will battle Saudi Arabian clubs for Matic’s signature.
Many Serie A legends have completed a move to MLS, including Lorenzo Insigne who is closing in on a move back to Italy after cutting ties with Toronto FC.
Inter Miami, Los Angeles FC and Philadelphia Union are all keeping tabs on Matic’s situation in Italy, as the Serbian could still extend his stay by another year.
Matic is said to be earning around €70,000 per week and would likely receive a decrease in pay if he were to stay with Sassuolo – meaning a move elsewhere could become even more tempting.
