Roma Take Major Step Towards New Stadium As Italian Side Seal Key Approval
After months of discussions, Roma have made progress towards a new home ground.
Roma have taken a huge step towards the construction of a new stadium as the Giallorossi look to move out of Stadio Olimpico.
Roma Take Major Step Towards New Stadium
The Giallorossi are set to begin the construction of a new home ground in March 2027, as the Serie A side close in on approval from the Final City Council.
In July 2022, the Friedkin Group ownership announced plans over a new home ground for Roma, with hopes of acting as a host stadium for the 2032 European Championship.
This new stadium will hold a capacity of 60,605 (3,237 away fans) and may require almost 40 months of construction – costing the Serie A side around €1.4billion.
Italian soccer authorities have warned Roma that construction must begin by March 2027 and the ground is expected to host its first match towards the end of 2030.
Not only will this raise Roma’s overall revenue to €165 million by 2035, but it will also impact the surrounding areas economically as a host of fresh amenities are expected.
The Municipality will still own the land but Roma will hold the right to use the ground and add any further construction going forward.
Roma do not have the complete go-ahead at this moment in time as the Giallorossi must wait until February to receive approval from the Final City Council before a decision from the Conference of Services in March – which could not reach a full verdict until the summer.
Supporters have obviously been divided in their opinions as Stadio Olimpico has become a renowned ground in Italy, but Roma fans have other concerns after being banned from away matches for a violent conflict against Fiorentina supporters.
Moving into a new home ground will not only impact Roma, but Lazio also as the two sides currently share Stadio Olimpico and the Laziali are looking to renovate Stadio Flaminio before moving to the stadium in 2028/29.
This will leave Stadio Olimpico in a precarious position and the future of the iconic soccer stadium is unclear.
Stadio Olimpico Future Unclear
Roma and Lazio have been co-tenants for over 70-years, as the two Rome-based sides moved into the ground in May 1953.
This came to an end for a singular season in 1989/90 as Stadio Olimpico was subject to heavy changes for the 1990 World Cup and the two clubs shared Stadio Flaminio.
Stadio Olimpico has become one of the biggest attractions for Italian sport, as it is used for national athletics, the Italian rugby team and the Coppa Italia final.
The ground has proven to be a tough place for players to adapt as shown by Leon Bailey’s spell with Roma which led to the Giallorossi terminating the Jamaican’s loan.
Once Lazio and Roma move to their new home grounds, Stadio Olimpico will be left vacant for the majority of the year and plans for its future are yet to be confirmed.
The iconic ground is unlikely to be demolished as the Italian soccer authorities are hoping to use it during the 2032 Euros.
