The Newcastle United midfielder has been linked with a move back to Italy after recent injury concerns have seen Tonali fall behind Lewis Miley in the heart of midfield.

Tonali was forced off during the half-time break against Tottenham Hotspur in a match that also saw another Italian international in Destiny Udogie be dealt a fresh injury concern.

Udogie was absent from Spurs’ following Premier League match and is set to miss Tottenham’s upcoming European clash, while Tonali is a doubt for the Magpies’ trip to Leverkusen.

This uncertainty in Tyneside has cast the Italian’s future with doubt and Tonali is now considering a return to Serie A, despite signing an extended deal with the Magpies.

During his 10-month ban for gambling breaches, Tonali extended his deal with Newcastle to help the club financially and is now under contract until June 2029.

Tonali joined Newcastle in July 2023 for €60.8million, but missed the majority of his debut season through suspension and this difficult period caused the Italian to consider a move away from Newcastle.

Multiple reports suggested that Tonali was being monitored by a host of Serie A sides during the summer transfer window, with Juventus and AC Milan acting as front-runners.

AC Milan and Sandro Tonali have a rich history together after the Italian made 130 appearances for the Rossoneri between 2020-2023.

The Italian went on to win the Serie A title with Milan during the 2021/22 campaign and Max Allegri’s side are on track to achieve this feat again this season.

Milan sit top of Serie A after Christian Pulisic’s heroic display against Torino on December 8th and the Rossoneri are expected to be rewarded with some huge moves in 2026.

Tonali would be open to a move back to Milan next-year, but the Rossoneri will face competition from another Italian giant, as Juventus reignite their interest.

The Bianconeri were heavily interested in Tonali during the summer, but were left deterred by Newcastle’s €80m asking price – but Luciano Spalletti could play a huge role in a future bid.

Spalletti sparked a strong relationship with the Newcastle midfielder during his time as Azzurri manager and is looking for ways to avoid a Hugh transfer fee.

Juve are considering a potential swap deal involving Dusan Vlahovic, as the Serbian has been ruled out until March 2026 and is the highest paid player in Turin.
