Although De Winter took the headlines after Napoli, the bigger issue is Milan asking too few bodies to play too many minutes.

Rossoneri coach Massimiliano Allegri said his charges have conceded “avoidable” goals lately and must defend “differently”.

“If you concede almost avoidable goals for three matches in a row, it means you have to defend differently,” he told reporters at full-time.

“Maybe we subconsciously let something slip and were punished for it. We might also have had more luck and not conceded, but we defended poorly.”

His comments suggest the issues are partly tactical, but they are also about the personnel situation when the margin for error gets thin.

Behind the starters, Milan’s only defensive cover on the bench includes inexperienced options.

Against Napoli, the only alternatives on the bench were Matteo Dutu and David Odogu.

In terms of first-team defenders, Allegri has just Fikayo Tomori, Strahinja Pavlovic, Gabbia and De Winter competing for three roles.

While that may work when things are going well, it becomes fragile when injuries, suspensions, or fatigue take their toll.

With Scudetto talk never far away, Milan must reinforce their defensive ranks, because further personnel issues could derail their form and possibly their season.

Milan’s January fix should be experience, not improvisation

The solution does not need to be glamorous: Milan need an experienced centre-back who can start or close games cleanly.

Gazzetta recently claimed that Milan’s mid-December plan is to sign a central defender, ideally experienced and on loan.

That fits a winter window, when the best value is reliability rather than long-term projects still learning the system.

Thiago Silva is on Milan’s radar, according to reports, and the appeal is obvious: leadership, organisation, and calm decision-making.

However, Milan cannot rely on nostalgia and past glories – after all, he is 41 years old.

In a three-man defence, pace, availability and match rhythm matter just as much.

A fifth senior option would let Allegri rest key defenders, reduce emergency reshuffles, and keep youngsters from forced minutes.

It would also help De Winter himself: rotation players improve with stability, not by being the last available name.

Milan want new strikers, with Niclas Fullkrug reportedly closing in on a San Siro switch.

And considering Christopher Nkunku and Santiago Gimenez face uncertain futures at Milan, this is a good call.

But while more firepower is a necessity, the Rossoneri defence is now crying out for reinforcements too.
