Who Is Pio Esposito? Vieri-Like Italian Striker Who Made Inter Winter Champions

Inter youngster Pio Esposito was the hero against Lecce as he made the Nerazzurri ‘winter champions’.

The 20-year-old has been going from strength to strength since coming through the ranks at Inter.

And on Wednesday, Esposito came off the bench at San Siro and scored in the 78th minute, turning a rebound into the winner in a 1-0 victory.

The result helped Inter move six points clear at the top of Serie A, after Napoli dropped points earlier in the round.

Esposito’s name is gaining traction in Italy and will surely become global in years to come. Footitalia probes further.

Pio Esposito hails from the same town as Gianluigi Donnarumma

Francesco Pio Esposito was born on 28 June 2005 in Castellammare di Stabia, where Gianluigi Donnarumma also hails from.

Esposito is a 20-year-old centre-forward who stands around 6ft 3 tall, giving Inter a strong target in the box.

The right-footer joined Inter’s academy as a teenager and rose quickly through the youth teams before getting senior chances.

He spent two seasons on loan at Spezia, gaining senior experience and scoring 22 goals from 79 outings.

This season, Esposito wears the number 94 jersey for Inter and is contracted to the club until the summer of 2030.

Esposito has also exploded onto the international scene, scoring three goals from his first five Italy caps.

Pio Esposito comparisons with Christian Vieri

Pio Esposito is a classic No.9. He is tall, strong in the air, good with his back to goal, and sharp with his movement in the box.

Luciano Spalletti sung Esposito’s praises after his debut Italy goal in the 3-1 win over Estonia in October 2025.

“Last night, he scored an incredible goal, for both coordination and the way he struck the ball,” said the former Azzurri coach.

“Maybe Bobo Vieri was something like that. Whatever you threw at him, he’d return it clean and perfectly set up.

“Pio is the same. I saw him play many times for Spezia last season.”

Lautaro Martinez also loves Esposito, previously tipping  him to be “so important for the future of Italian football”.

Esposito and Cristian Chivu get along perfectly too, which is great news for the young striker’s development.

How Pio Esposito performed against Lecce

Against Lecce, Inter struggled to create clear chances, with goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone making key saves and defenders blocking shots.

Esposito’s goal wasn’t exactly vintage. He reacted quickest after Falcone pushed a shot back into play and turned it home.

Inter’s own website described the finish as “imperfect”, but it was the kind of moment that wins titles when matches are tight.

It’ll be exciting to see how Esposito develops over the coming years. If he’s this good at 20, the sky really is the limit for him.
