Manchester Utd Identify Two Serie A Goalkeepers To Replace Andre Onana At Old Trafford

Start

Zion Suzuki and Mike Maignan are both on Manchester Utd’s summer wishlist to replace Andre Onana.

The Cameroonian has struggled at Old Trafford since making a €55.4million ($63.2million) from Inter in 2023. A series of individual blunders have cast doubts over his long-term Red Devils future.

Onana arrived at United with a glowing reputation. His heroics at the San Siro saw him help the Nerazzurri to the 2023 Coppa Italia and he was part of the XI who lost to Man City in the Champions League final the same year.

However, Onana was unable to translate that form in England. His continued mistakes in goal have cost Ruben Amorim’s side vital wins on a number of occassions in 2024-25.

In the recent Europa League clash against Lyon, Onana was directly at fault for both of the French club’s goals in the 2-2 draw. Before the match, Les Gones midfielder Nemanja Matic labelled Onana as ‘one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.’

Will Zion Suzuki Sign For Manchester Utd?

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Zion Suzuki has been identified as a potential replacement for Andre Onana at Manchester Utd.

The Parma goalkeeper has starred at the Ennio Tardini Stadium this season. Suzuki has been one of head coach Cristian Chivu’s best players after joining the club in the summer.

Born in New Jersey, Suzuki is a Japan international and has made 18 appearances for his country. For I Crociati, the 22-year-old has kept six clean sheets in 31 outings.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Suzuki is tipped to have a very bright soccer future. He reportedly has a €40million ($45.6million) release clause which can be exercised at the end of the current campaign.

Is Mike Maignan Good Enough For Manchester Utd?

Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is also on Manchester Utd’s wishlist. The 29-year-old has been at the San Siro since 2021 and is a huge fans favourite.

In his debut season at the Rossoneri, Maignan won the Serie A title. The 29-year-old also won Ligue 1 with Lille. He has also been named Goalkeeper of the Year in both Italy and France.

Such accolades will certainly excite the Red Devils who need a proven winner in their ranks. However, affording Maignan could prove problematic.

United’s financial situation isn’t strong plus Maignan is understood to be negotiating new terms with Milan. Furthermore, if Ruben Amorim’s side fail to qualify for Europe next season, it’s very unlikely Maignan will transfer.
