Atalanta vs Monza Preview
It’s been an interesting build-up for Atalanta ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, as long-term manager Gian Piero Gasperini decided to party ways with the club after almost 10-years in charge.
The veteran manager will return to Bergamo during the Serie A season, but this will be in the opposition dug-out after taking the reins at AS Roma.
Another major talking-point for La Dea has been the controversy surrounding Ademola Lookman, with the Nigerian international submitting a transfer request following two official bids from Inter Milan.
The Nerazzurri are reportedly preparing a third offer to tempt Atalanta into a sale and Cristian Chivu’s side now hold some leverages as Lookman has failed to turn up to training in recent days.
As for Atalanta’s performances on the pitch, pre-season has gone according to plan so far, beating the U23 1-0 and earning a 2-1 win away from home against RB Leipzig thanks to late goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Lorenzo Bernasconi.
Similarly, Monza have also put in a faultless display in the build-up to next season, winning each of their four pre-season encounters so far and conceding just one goal.
Finding form ahead of next season will be crucial for Monza after their relegation from Serie A last season, accumulating just 18 points and conceding 69 goals.
You have to go back to 1999 to find Monza’s last win over Atalanta and this has caused offshore sportsbooks to price the Serie A side as huge favorites to win on August 6th.
Atalanta Team News
Gianluca Scamacca’s goal off the bench against Leipzig came in his first appearance since February 2024 and may push the Italian further into starting contention, however, the Italian is still recovering from the injury that kept him out of action for several months.
Ademola Lookman will play no part in any of Atalanta’s pre-season encounters as he continues to push for a move away, however, Ivan Juric has already targeted multiple options to replace the Nigerian.
Juric has made wholesale changes to his side during the two pre-season matches so far, changing the starting eleven at half-time against the U23 side and doing so again in the 65th minute against Leipzig.
Atalanta Predicted Line-Up: Canesecchi; Scalvini, Hien, Kossounou; Zappacosta, Ederson, De Roon, Bellanova; Sulemana, Pasalic, De Ketelaere
Monza Team News
The Serie B side have fielded a strong roster in each of their four pre-season matches so far and are expected to do so again as Monza face their biggest test so far.
Paolo Bianco will be hoping to get a better look at some of his summer signings like Pedro Obiang, Jacopo Sardo and Lorenzo Lucchesi ahead of their season opener against Frosinone in the Coppa Italia on August 17th.
Monza Predicted Line-Up: Pizzignacco; Domanico, Izzo, Lucchesi; Ciurria, Sardo, Obiang, Capolupo; Colpani, Capriari, Ganvoula
Prediction
Both teams have picked up a perfect record in pre-season so far, as Atalanta prepare for their first Serie A campaign without Gian Piero Gasperini in just under a decade.
However, Monza’s level of opponent has been far-off the quality that Atalanta boast and the Serie B side may struggle against their league-superior opposition.
With that in mind, we expect Ivan Juric’s men to earn a comfortable victory behind closed doors and La Dea should be looking to keep a clean sheet along the way.
Prediction: Atalanta 3-0 Monza
