Harry Maguire Targeted By Serie A Giants As Manchester United Stall Over Contract Extension
Serie A could welcome another Premier League star in 2026, as Harry Maguire continues to stall negotiations over a new Manchester United contract.
Harry Maguire has reportedly attracted interest from Serie A, as the Englishman’s contract with Manchester United expires in 2026.
Will Harry Maguire Leave Manchester United in 2026?
Harry Maguire could be on his way out of Manchester after the 2025/26 season, as the Englishman’s contract is set to expire in June next year and negotiations have reportedly hit a snag.
The 32-year-old has endured a difficult time at Old Trafford since becoming the most expensive defender in history following a €87 million move in August 2019.
After an impressive start to his Manchester United career, Maguire obtained the captain’s armband under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and cemented a place in the starting eleven.
However, his spell as captain came to an end at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign, as Erik ten Hag decided to hand the responsibility to Bruno Fernandes and strip Maguire of his duties.
This appeared to have a domino effect on the English international, as Maguire’s performances on the pitch dwindled and every mistake became a major talking-point on social media.
Despite these troubles at club level, Maguire was a regular member in the England national team and played a crucial role under Gareth Southgate who has recently been tipped to become the next Italy manager.
Maguire was set for a move away during the 2023 summer transfer window, as the Red Devils accepted a €30m bid from West Ham – but the defender decided to stay and fight for his place in Manchester.
In November 2024 Manchester United appointed Ruben Amorim and the Portuguese manager’s arrival sparked a new lease of life into Maguire’s Red Devils career.
United’s set-up under Amorim includes a third center-back which has seen Maguire make more appearances for the Premier League giants and the Englishman has been involved in some huge moments.
On October 19th, the English international scored a late winner against Liverpool to secure Manchester United’s first win at Anfield in just under a decade and highlighted his importance to the side.
Overall Maguire has made 255 appearances for the Red Devils, contributing to an impressive 26 goals (19G + 7A) – whilst winning Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
Although the 32-year-old has seen a rise in importance under Ruben Amorim, his deal in Manchester is set to expire in June 2026 meaning he will be available as a free agent at the end of the season.
Negotiations over an extended deal appear to have stalled and the Red Devils may be looking to receive a fee for the Brit as opposed to losing Maguire on a free – meaning a January move to Serie A is possible.
Would Harry Maguire Move To Serie A?
Maguire’s recent performances for Manchester United have reminded fans across the globe that the Englishman is still a top defender and can compete at the highest level.
This has caught the eye of several teams in Serie A, as AC Milan and Napoli are reportedly considering a move for the English international next year.
Massimiliano Allegri has made a superb start to his second-spell at the San Siro, as the Rossoneri sit third in Serie A after picking up 22-points from 11 matches so far.
The Italian coach is renowned for utilizing a back-three, which is something that Maguire has become accustomed to in recent years under Ruben Amorim.
Although signing Maguire would be a major coup for the Rossoneri, their priority may be to bring in a new striker as Santiago Gimenez has attracted interest from several European sides.
Milan are not the only Italian side that are in the running to sign Maguire in 2026, as Serie A champions Napoli are reportedly looking to land the Brit’s signature.
Bringing in players from Manchester United has proved to be hugely successful for Antonio Conte, with Scott McTominay guiding the Partenopei to the Scudetto in his debut season and Rasmus Hojlund finding form after signing on loan in the summer.
Despite their Serie A triumph last season, Napoli have struggled to meet expectations this season, losing five games across all competitions and dropping to fourth in the table.
Bringing in Maguire would bring some defensive solidity to Napoli’s back-line, which is an issue that Conte has highlighted during the 2025/26 season.
Both Napoli and AC Milan will have to make a decision over the signing of Harry Maguire, as the Englishman will be available to sign a pre-contract agreement or complete the move for around €15m in January.
