Atalanta Set To Renew Interest In ‘Serie A Fan’ Jean-Philippe Mateta
Mateta won the 2025 FA Cup and Community Shield with the Eagles.
Jean-Philippe Mateta is firmly back on Atalanta’s radar as La Dea prepare a fresh bid for the Crystal Palace star.
The Bergamo-based side had a €35million offer turned down in the summer for the French center-forward. Now, recently-installed head coach Raffaele Palladino wants to test the Eagles resolve once more.
Mateta is still hesitant about signing a new deal at Selhurst Park. A number of clubs are tracking the 28-year-old but the Serie A club firmly believes they can win the race for his signature next month.
Jean-Philippe Mateta Transfer News
Although Atalanta targeted Jean-Philippe Mateta in the off-season and ultimately failed, La Dea still want to increase their attacking options and are happy to pursue Mateta once again.
The 2024 Europa League winners haven’t struggled for goals this term. However, their lowly position in the table indicates more firepower is needed to challenge for a Champions League spot.
Mateta has shined once again for Crystal Palace this season despite playing through the pain barrier. The France international came off the bench in the recent Conference League draw with KuPS.
It’s been mooted that knee surgery may be a requirement but the Eagles are hoping this isn’t the case. If Mateta doesn’t undergo the knife, Atalanta is set to launch a bid in the region of €30m for the forward.
What Other Clubs Want To Sign Jean-Philippe Mateta?
In November, Roma was linked with Jean-Philippe Mateta and their interest still remains solid. Especially as the Giallorossi have struggled to find the back of the net this term.
However, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side has a number of shortlisted players they are mulling over. Many on their radar are viewed as more likely and financially viable options than Mateta.
With AC Milan interested in Niclas Fullkrug – with a straight loan deal close to fruition – their pursuit of a striker appears to be coming to an end. Much to Atalanta’s advantage.
Across the continent, a plethora of English Premier League sides are all monitoring Mateta. They include the likes of Tottenham, West Ham, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Aston Villa are also considering Mateta as they embark on a top-four finish. Current leaders Arsenal are also keeping tabs with Viktor Gyokeres struggling in north London.
Will Mateta Sign A New Crystal Palace Contract?
It’s no secret that Jean-Philippe Mateta wants to play Champions League soccer. His current deal runs out in 2027 and it’s unlikely he’ll achieve his ambition with Crystal Palace.
With the above in mind, the Eagles star will be strongly considering his options. Aged 28, he is very much in his prime and will want to follow the likes of former teammates Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise into Europe’s elite club competition.
Both players have flourished under the employment of Arsenal and Bayern Munich. After Mateta recently confessed he is a “Serie A fan,” Atalanta will need to convince the Frenchman he can reach the UCL with them.
Moving in January can often be problematic for star players. However, a switch to Bergamo will give Mateta every chance of helping the club secure a top four finish.
Palace understands that penning a new contract is highly improbable. Therefore, La Dea must demonstrate that they and Mateta can reach the promised land come the end of the season.
