Roma Submit Key Feasibility Documents as They Press Ahead With Plans to Build Italy’s Most Expensive Stadium

Roma’s new stadium just moved a step closer to becoming reality, after the club announced they have submitted feasibility documents and project plans.
Roma are pushing full steam ahead in their ambitions to modernize the club, which begins by moving in to their very own dedicated stadium.
Having shared Rome’s Stadio Olimpico with city rivals Lazio since 1953, Roma’s plans to construct a new state-of-the-art stadium are fuelled by a desire to take great control of revenue.
The vast majority of Italian clubs, including Roma, continue to pay leases on their council-owned stadiums, and as such are limited in what they can do to expand.
Roma’s proposed new stadium will unshackle them from the city’s control, albeit after forking out for a hefty construction bill.
The club have announced they have submitted feasibility documents, and the project will now go through the city council commissions early this year.
A statement released by Roma read: “The submitted project represents the result of in-depth work carried out with technical precision, attention to sustainability, and a clear vision: to offer the city of Rome and its fans a facility worthy of their history, passion, and future.”

When Will Roma’s New Stadium Be Completed?
Roma have overcome environmental challenges and proven their feasibility, which leaves all parties confident that the council will approve plans in 2026.
The initial project had aimed to complete construction by 2027 to celebrate Roma’s centenary, but resistance from locals in the Pietralata district has pushed plans back to 2028.
While those plans may appears ambitious given the enormity of the project, the 2028 target is with a view to positioning Roma’s new ground as a potential Euro 2032 host stadium.
Roma’s New Stadium Capacity and Construction Costs
Roma will actually be downsizing when they move into their new home. The proposed 62,000-seater is little over 8,000 less than the Stadio Olimpico, although they will now be able to pocket a larger share of matchday revenue.
The project, which also included brand-new metro access, roads and bridges, will cost an estimated $1.1 billion.
That will make it the most expensive stadium ever to be built in Italy, and takes the Friedkin Group’s stadium expenditure beyond the $2 billion mark, having bankrolled Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The ‘Curva Sud’ – or the south stand what will be directly behind one of the goals – will house an estimate 21,000 supporters. This makes it one of the biggest single stands in Europe.
The club say it is “designed as the beating heart of the stadium and a symbol of Romanista passion”.
