Why Bayern Munich and Barcelona Are Gushing Over Lecce Defender Tiago Gabriel
Lecce have unearthed a gem in Tiago Gabriel, who is commanding the attention of Europe's elite.

Lecce’s talent mill may have churned out another world-beater in Tiago Gabriel, whose performances since arriving in Italy are that of a player well beyond his years.
Lecce’s latest masterstroke in the transfer market saw them pick up Portugal U21 international Tiago Gabriel for a mere €1 million.
Since making his debut against Juventus back in April, Gabriel has shown himself to be one of Serie A’s most promising centre-backs, consistently displaying the kind of defensive purity that is revelled in Italy.
Lecce have one of the better defensive records in the bottom-half despite languishing in 16th, and alongside Kialonda Gaspar, they owe their pairing at the back plenty of credit this season.
Gaspar arrived with Gabriel in a cut-price double swoop from Estrela da Amadora, but if the latter’s performances are anything to go by, Lecce’s resolve to keep their central partnership together will soon be tested.
Interest close to home has been floated by Inter Milan and Juventus, who are both interested in bolstering their defensive options after being rocked by significant injury problems.
Further afield, however, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have already sent scouts to watch Gabriel this season.
Tiago Gabriel Style of Play
Tiago Gabriel is perhaps not ‘in fashion’, but his defensive contributions can not be ignored.
He doesn’t quite fit the mould of a modern centre-back; that is, emphasis on how quick one is along the ground, as well as how effectively they can play out from the back.
That is one area where Gabriel’s overall game certainly has room to evolve, but what he lacks in in-possession sequences, he more than makes up for when faced with opposition threat.
At six-foot-five, he is a towering presence. That is evidenced by his staggering dominance in aerial duels, which averages at just over four per-90. That puts him in the 98th percentile for centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues, which spotlights a personal trait that is beneficial at both ends of the pitch.

On the ground he is hugely effective at sweeping up any mess, making almost seven clearances (85th percentile) and 1.86 tackles per-90 (78th percentile).
His lanky frame makes him nigh impossible to get past, even if he lacks any significant pace. His dogged ability to win ground duels is clearly where he excels, making him a pure defensive asset.
He also ranks in the 97th percentile for non-penalty xG compared to the rest of Europe, so his threat from set-pieces is clear.
Gabriel may benefit from a manager or a system that places more emphasis on retaining possession, which could help develop his below average passing and dribbling stats.
Although he ranks above average in pass completion, his in-possession actions could be massively improved; for context, his progressive passes and progressive carries rank in the second and 11th percentile respectively.
Which Team Could Be the Best Fit For Tiago Gabriel?
As mentioned, Tiago Gabriel has a long line of potential suitors showing interest.
Having only just turned 21, Gabriel can afford to bid his time to find the right fit, and with over half of the season left to play, he isn’t expected to leave unless Lecce receive a significant offer in January.
The likes of Juventus and Barcelona are certainly in no position to be splashing cash given their financial positions, while Inter appear more concerned with replacing the injured Denzel Dumfries at right-back, rather than adding a central defender.
The consensus is Bayern are also content with their defensive options at this moment in time, so their interest may remain dormant until the summer.
Interest from Saudi Arabia has also been reported – specifically from Neom SC – who have the capital to blow any other offers out the water.
It appears unlikely Lecce’s jewel will leave halfway through his first season as a starter, and given his rapid ascension, his market value will continue to skyrocket as the season wears on.
Come the summer, options in Italy may be of the most interest given Juventus are constantly plugging gaps left by injury-plagued Gleison Bremer, who is akin to Gabriel in defensive purity.
Elsewhere, Inter are edging closer to the day when veteran pair Stefan de Vrij and Francesco Acerbi may depart, and Gabriel could enter the frame as an adequate, Serie A-proven replacement.
