No Team in Europe’s Top Five Leagues Has Generated Fewer Expected Goals Than Cremonese This Season

Cremonese have the lowest xG in Europe as their worrying run of form shows little signs of slowing down.
Since back-to-back wins against Bologna and Lecce to kick off a promising start to December, Cremonese’s fortunes have flipped entirely.
Sassuolo’s third minute goal proved to be the winner on Sunday, stretching Cremonese’s winless run to eight games and pushing them further towards to the relegation zone.
For now, they are buoyed by their promising early-season form which is keeping the drop zone at arm’s length, but as movers around them such as Genoa and Cagliari string points together, they are in danger of slipping further.
That run of eight games has seen them pick up just three points, but there is a more worrying statistic bubbling under the surface.
Cremonese Have the Lowest xG in Europe This Season
FootItalia already predicted this potential downfall at the start of the month, revealing Cremonese’s ticking time bomb in the context of xG.
Not only have they continued to allow the most Expected Goals from opposition teams, but they have done little to improve their own chance-to-goal rate.
Within the aforementioned winless run Cremonese scored just twice; both of which came in the same fixture against Cagliari on matchday 19.
Cremonese’s worrying lack of both chance creation and ability to put opportunities away leaves them with the lowest xG in Europe among the continent’s top five leagues.
They are also the only team among those leagues to register an xG per match of below one.

The narrative surrounding one of Serie A’s newcomers is quickly transitioning from gritty efficiency in attack, to a decidedly blunted front line who are costing them points.
While xG fails to tell the whole story, it is an accurate indicator that Cremonese were perhaps riding their luck, and scraping points off the back of the finest of margins earlier in the season.
The prospect of their current winless run coming to an end appears to be out of sight for the next two gameweeks, with Serie A’s biggest xG overperformer and league leaders Inter Milan up next.
That is followed by a short trip to Atalanta, who are unbeaten in their previous five.
They also must find a way to contend with their fragile defence, who are conceding the most xG in the league at 1.81 per contest.
