Inter Milan icon, Christian Vieri, has revealed his disappointment over Simone Inzaghi leaving the San Siro and claims the Champions League final defeat to PSG was the final straw.
Why Did Simone Inzaghi Leave Inter Milan?
After almost four-years as Inter Milan manager, Simone Inzaghi decided to part ways with the Italian side following their humiliating 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final.
Goals from Achraf Hakimi, Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu saw the French side win their first European trophy and win by the biggest margin in any Champions League final.
Suffering such a defeat in a match of that magnitude and falling short of the Serie A title to Napoli meant the 2024/25 season was rather disappointing for Inter and left Inzaghi with a decision to make.
He left the club with one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies and reached the Champions League final on two separate occasions – losing both times.
Despite reaching these two finals, Inter Milan are already being priced as huge outsiders to win the competition next season on Serie A betting sites.
The Italian opted to leave the club and has already found a new place to call home, as the 49-year-old became the new head coach of Saudi Pro League side, Al Hilal.
What Did Christian Vieri Say About Inzaghi’s Exit?
Inter Milan legend, Christian Vieri, spoke about the decision from Simone Inzaghi to leave the club and take over Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia – focusing on the heavy Champions League final defeat to PSG.
Vieri said: “After losing 5-0 I think he said to himself ‘you know what? I have no more energy. After losing 5-0 it took all my energy away.’ It’s one thing to lose 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1, you’re in the game, it’s ok. But 5-0 is a heavy way to lose. I think it just took all his energy away.
“Him and the club spoke and said ‘what should we do?’ And from what I heard they spoke in an easy way. I think he has done an amazing job in the last four years. Two times in three years playing in the final of the Champions League.”
Although Inter are well-regarded among the elite sides in Europe, Vieri also looked into their ability to spend like other huge clubs and believes Inzaghi did a phenomenal job with the budget.
Vieri said: “With the budget that Inter spends. Inter isn’t like Real Madrid, PSG, Barcelona, Manchester City or Bayern. They can spend all the money they want.
“We have to look at €5 million here or the €2 million here. So I think they did a phenomenal job.”
Who Will Be The Next Inter Milan Manager?
Inter have wasted no time in finding a replacement for Inzaghi, hiring former Parma boss Christian Chivu and adding Walter Samuel as an assistant manager.
Chivu impressed during his short spell as Parma boss, helping a side that had not won in 2025 move from 18th to 16th and maintain their status as a Serie A side.
During his 13 matches in charge, Parma only suffered three defeats and turned their back-line into an impenetrable force – drawing seven matches.
The Romanian has ended a run of six straight Italian managers at Inter, becoming the second man from his nation to take the reins of Nerazzurri – with Mircea Lucescu doing so in 1999/98.
