Winless Fiorentina On Course For Lowest Points Tally in Serie A’s 20-Team Era

A third successive defeat condemned Fiorentina to another week at the foot of the table, as they remain one of two teams in Europe’s top five leagues yet to taste victory.

Fiorentina continued their worst ever start to a Serie A season, as Sassuolo inflicted their eighth defeat.

Six points after 14 games leaves La Viola five points adrift from safety, and staring down the barrel of relegation for the first time in over two decades.

Stefano Pioli’s brief second spell lasted just four months after failing to win any of his 10 league fixtures in charge, but a managerial change has scarcely lifted spirits in Florence.

Paolo Vanoli has not fared any better, so far going winless himself, but a spirited 1-1 draw against Juventus in his second match in the dugout inspired a flicker of hope in a diffident group of players.

Nevertheless, matchday 14’s defeat in Sassuolo means they remain on a perilous decline towards Serie B football.

The crisis sweeping through Fiorentina reached a new low last time out, as Vanoli confirmed that first-choice penalty taker Albert Gudmundsson refused to take what would be their opening goal, which was followed by an argument between Rolando Mandragora and Moise Kean over who should step up.

It follows just days after Edin Dzeko’s outburst at Fiorentina fans  after losing at home to AEK Athens, where the striker criticized the home crowd’s ‘negative’ energy.

With the club rudderless and lost at sea, there are very few signs indicating an upturn in form.

Fiorentina’s Defensive Record Has Them Moored to the Bottom

Whereas Roma’s title bid is fuelled by their defense, Fiorentina’s is triggering their downfall.

They have conceded the most goals in Serie A this season, allowing 24 in 14 games, which equates to around 1.71 per-game.

Conceding at this current rate is a worrying omen for the remainder of their season. With 24 games left to play, Fiorentina would finish the season having allowed over 65 goals, should they continue on this path.

For context, only Verona and relegated Monza conceded over 60 goals last season.

While Fiorentina have managed to avoid slumping to the worst ever start to a Serie A season, no team has successfully steered clear of relegation with as few points as they have at this stage.

Fiorentina Are On Course For the Lowest Points Ever in Serie A

Fiorentina’s perpetual meander downriver means they drift further away from safety, and closer to a potentially damning milestone, that may see them etch their name into the history books – albeit for the wrong reasons.

La Viola’s six points after 14 games means they are averaging 0.42 points per-contest.

With 24 fixtures left to play, this kind of form would see them register just 10 more points to add to their six.

This would, therefore, set a new record for the lowest points ever in Serie A since it was expanded to 20 teams in 2004-05.

Lowest Points Ever in a Serie A Season

  • Fiorentina: 16 (Projected based on 2025-26 form)
  • Salernitana: 17 (2023-24)
  • Chievo: 17 (2018-19)
  • Monza: 18 (2023/24)
