Marsch Names Who’s Better Between David And Nkunku After Working With Both

Both players are high in Marsch's estimations.

Jesse Marsch has compared Juventus striker Jonathan David and AC Milan counterpart Christopher Nkunku, having coached both in his career.

David ended his Serie A scoring drought with the third goal in Juve’s 3-0 win over Sassuolo on January 6.

The Juventus ace had gone 135 days without scoring in Serie A and was criticised after missing a penalty against Lecce.

Meanwhile, Nkunku is up and running for Milan after scoring a brace in the 3-0 win over Hellas Verona on December 28.

Jonathan David ‘second only behind Erling Haaland’ while Christopher Nkunku ‘has a lot of quality’

Marsch currently coaches the Canada men’s soccer team, which means he works regularly with David.

The American coach also worked with Nkunku when both were at German club RB Leipzig in 2021.

Marsch, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, praised David for ending his goal drought and backed him to kick on.

“Now Jonathan won’t stop and will score a lot,” said the Wisconsin native. “He just needed a period of adaptation.”

Marsch then revealed he ranks David second only behind Erling Haaland in terms of the best strikers he has coached.

“I’m David’s coach in Canada, but during my time at Salzburg I coached Haaland, and at Leipzig I had AC Milan’s Nkunku and other great strikers,” he continued.

“After Erling, who is a monster, David is the best striker I’ve worked with. He’s always scored and will do so again even in a tournament with less space like Serie A.”

Nkunku also came in for praise, albeit not at the same level as David.

“Nkunku isn’t as a goalscorer, but he has a lot of quality,” said Marsch. “I’m happy that AC Milan is putting their faith in him.”

What next for David and Nkunku

Both David and Nkunku went into the January transfer window amid speculation over their respective futures.

There was talk of Sevilla circling around David, though that interest appears to have cooled in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Juventus have been linked with a number of strikers, which could have an impact on David’s role.

Juve are eyeing Darwin Nunez, though they seem him as more of a replacement for contract rebel Dusan Vlahovic.

Elsewhere, Parma striker Mateo Pellegrino is reportedly a Bianconeri target after his 11 goals for the Gialloblu.

However, David’s timely goal, along with Vlahovic’s injury situation, may well have led to Juve opting to stick with him for now.

There has also been speculation involving Juve and Nkunku, whose Milan tenure did not get off to a great start.

However, the France international has since picked up an ankle injury, which has come at the worst possible time.

Nkunku had the chance to build momentum after his Verona brace, but now he must return to fitness first.

Much like David, the likelihood is Nkunku will stick around at least until the end of the season.

Should either player kick on, then their respective clubs will be glad that they did not succumb to knee-jerk reactions.

And if either player struggles, then at least the transfer window will enable their respective clubs to find alternatives without too much of a rush.
