Oscar Hiljemark is the new Pisa coach, signing until 2027 as the Swedish tactician looks to guide the Tuscan club away from danger.

Oscar Hiljemark Pisa era officially begins
It’s official: Oscar Hiljemark is the new coach of Pisa Sporting Club.
On Tuesday, the Tuscan club announced the agreement in an official statement, giving the Swedish coach, born in 1992, the technical lead of the first team until June 30, 2027, with an option for an additional season.
This happened after sacking Alberto Gilardino.
Hiljemark played midfield, but his career ended too soon at 28 because of a bad injury.
However, he still has a lot to show for it as a player though.
He won the Swedish championship with Elfsborg, the Eredivisie title with PSV Eindhoven, and the European Under-21 title with Sweden. He also played in the 2018 World Cup.
From early retirement to fast-rising coach
His connection with Italian football is pretty significant.
He played in over 100 games for Italian clubs, including for Palermo and Genoa, where he made a lasting impression with his performance and reliability. After he stopped playing, he immediately started coaching.
First, he was an assistant coach at Aalborg in 2021, and then he was the head coach from 2023 onward. His results and playing style earned him a return to Elfsborg, where he’s led the team in the league and in Europe since 2024.
He’s even reached the Europa League group stage and beaten Juric’s Roma.
Coaching path and European experience
When it comes to tactics, he usually goes with a three-man defense, which he often turns into a pretty proactive and intense 3-4-3.
“I want to create space with the ball by making it vertical… The defensive phase is very important, but so are positive and negative transitions” he said in his first interview.
At only 33, he’s already racked up over 100 games as a manager, with 16 of those being in Europe.
In his first interview, he said that Pisa are a great club, and all his staff want to do a great job together, creating the possibility of saving the Tuscan club from relegation.
He knows that Pisa are currently in a bit of a tricky situation, but there’s a good chance to do a great job together.
The team is solid and talented, and he is eager to get things started.
