Paolo Di Canio has hinted that Bernardo Silva could be heading to Italy at the end of the season.

Set to leave Manchester City, Silva will become a free agent in June. As reported by FootItalia, numerous clubs want to sign him, while Juventus have moved to snap him up.

The 31-year-old can now officially discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs after his deal entered its final six months, and he has often been linked with a move to Serie A.

Pep Guardiola has admitted Silva could choose to move on from City after a glittering nine-year spell in which he won six Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Silva is open to taking on a new challenge, but has not made a final decision on his next move.

Regardless, Di Canio has poured fuel on the fire, speculating that the playmaker will soon be Italy-bound.

Speaking on Sky Calcio Club, he hinted that a big name is weighing up switching to Serie A, before eventually confirming the player he had been cheekily alluding to was in fact Silva.

While it is not known whether Di Canio was given the inside track on the transfer, he appeared confident that Silva is likely to leave City.

“Like other top players who are no longer very young, he could come to our league,” Di Canio said.

The player-turned-pundit then appeared to play down the idea that the former Monaco man could join Napoli.

“I didn’t necessarily say Napoli,” Di Canio added. “It could be something more unusual… teams that play possession football, a web of short passes, not exactly like City, but with similar principles.”

Both Napoli and Juventus have been linked with Silva. However, only the latter are believed to have made a move.

According to La Stampa, contact has been made to establish his interest in joining on a free transfer. Intriguingly, they are also said to have not dismissed the prospect of looking to sign him this month.

Luciano Spalletti wants to rejuvenate his title-chasing squad with leaders and personalities, traits he values highly. Serial winner Silva would certainly inject some invaluable experience into the dressing room.

City are said to be hopeful that the player, now their club captain, will decide to stay. Work on a contract extension is ongoing behind the scenes, while he remains one of the first names on Guardiola’s team sheets.

But the rumour mill is continuing to churn, and Di Canio’s comments will only help to drive the narrative.

It is no wonder, then, that he issued a joking apology to Silva’s agent, Jorge Mendes, live on air.
