The goalkeeper’s departure from the San Siro looked like a foregone conclusion just several weeks ago. However, he has now performed a staggering U-turn and is open to a new deal.

His breakdown in relations with the club’s hierarchy led to talks being placed on hold indefinitely. A failure to reach an agreement on fresh terms a year ago also saw Maignan reevaluate his future.

But now, the 30-year-old has never been closer to extending his stay in Milan. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the contract on the table will run until 2031 with a €5.7million salary, similar to Rafael Leao’s wages.

Further discussions will take place over the coming days, with I Rossoneri hopeful Maignan will put pen to paper.

MilanNews have reported that a video call between Milan’s executives, the stopper and his agent, Jonathan Kebe, took place recently. Sources have claimed that Kebe has been a ‘tough nut to crack’ during negotiations.

However, Maignan has now ‘given in’ to the ‘long, intense, consistent and convincing’ sales pitch from Massimiliano Allegri and sporting director Igli Tare, the same publication have said.

The improvement in matters on and off the pitch at the club also led Maignan to change his stance.

With Milan competing once again, and Allegri impressing in the dugout, the future looks bright at the San Siro. Maignan, now open to being part of it, also holds a strong relationship with goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi.

When Mike Maignan Will Make Decision On His Future

The goalkeeper is expected to make his official response to the offer in the coming days.

According to Corriere della Sera, a meeting will take place later this week between Milan’s management and Maignan’s representatives. It is hoped that a belated final agreement on terms will be reached.

Meanwhile, Allegri’s No 1 will start against Genoa on Thursday evening. A win will see them move one point behind leaders Inter and, crucially, three points above third-placed Napoli in the Champions League race.

Maignan’s performances have returned to their world-class best this season, convincing Milan to keep him instead of casting their net out into the uncertain transfer market.

Chelsea came close to signing him last summer and retained their interest, but they are braced for disappointment.

A lowball €15m offer was rejected out of hand ahead of the Club World Cup, despite Maignan being tempted.
